At some point in your career, you may be faced with a choice of whether or not to relocate to a new city, state or even across the country for your work. In the current climate of processing plants shutting down, increased mergers and takeovers occurring across Australia, more and more people may have to look at relocating as an option.
Experts say that relocating for your career can be one of the most stressful things you’ll ever face. It may mean leaving a hometown full of family and friends, or a city that you love. On top of adjusting to a new job and a different set of workplace characters, you have to create a new home for yourself and get to know a new town. There’s no doubt about it – relocation is a challenge and it is stressful.
There are however, some ways to ensure you have a much less stressful move than you thought possible.
1. Give yourself as much time as possible
If you think that you may have to relocate for work, start to think about it before signing the contract so you can have as much time as possible to plan ahead. Remember that if you only start to plan your relocation once you have signed a new contract, you‘ll only give yourself 2 – 3 weeks to plan.... 6 – 8 weeks of planning time is ideal!
2. Get Organized
To stay organized during your move, make a list of all the tasks you need to do, then divide them into weeks, allowing yourself enough days to complete everything on that week's list.
3. Clear Out the Clutter
I recommend you tackle this one first: getting rid of the clutter will help you be, and feel, more organized. It will also ensure that when you begin packing, you'll only be packing the things that you need to.
4. Ask for Help
Sometimes it's difficult to ask for help. But remember, most people have been through at least one move in their lives and understand how hard it can be. Reach out. Ask friends and family if they can spare a couple of hours to help you sort, pack or move
5. Say Goodbye
Allow yourself the time to say goodbye. Throw a party. Invite friends out for dinner and do the things that you enjoy to help with the transition.
6. Allow Some Flexibility
Even if you're the most organized mover ever, things will still go wrong. Unplanned events will happen, so you need to be flexible and allow yourself some extra breathing room on either side of the move to help deal with problems if they arise.
Also, allow some time to see some sights along the way if you are driving and help turn the move into a bit of a holiday for the family.
7. Give yourself time to settle in
You're going to be living in chaos for a while, with boxes everywhere and things feeling out of control so it'll take a while for your new space to feel like your own and for you and your family to settle in.
Try to make your home as homely as possible as quick as you can and remember that it can take from 1 to 2 years to feel like are settled into your new city…. Give it time.
