10 things I have learned from 10 years working from home

If you’re working remote for the first time because of coronavirus, Here are some things that have helped me over the 10 odd years I’ve spent working from home.

  1. Have a dedicated “work” area. It’s ideal if you can shut the door when you’re done working, but having specific space makes it easier to *leave* it when work is done. Try to have it near a window or somewhere that is light.
  2. Have a to do list – This keeps me focused and prioritises my work day
  3. Work in blocks (2 hour / 3 hour etc) This allows you to keep focused but also acts to let other people in your house know not to interrupt you.
  4. Discover when you are most productive and build your work schedule around your peak productivity periods. Every individual is most productive at different times of the day
  5. Minimise distractions and good Bluetooth headphones can help. Makes all the difference to stay focused, you can play some music through them and it makes calling easier.
  6. Exercise, drink water and eat well – If you have a good breakfast and a good lunch, not only will need to snack less (distraction), you’ll have the energy to work.
  7. Take breaks. In the office, they’re built in. People stop by to chat, you go to a meeting room, you go grab coffee. You’ll need to pay more attention to this than you think. Also, without meetings, you can achieve a lot more in your day so how about scheduling a 2 hour lunch break? Do some exercise, have lunch, spend time with the family
  8. Buy a good chair.
  9. Don’t pop the TV on or have a beer midway through the day…. Doesn’t help with motivation!!
  10. Be kind to yourself. You may get your work done in a few hours or it may take the whole day. All in all, working from home requires balance so as long as the to do list is done, be happy.
